“A challenge to coordinate different goals”

Alexandra Elmer’s fascination for the logic of mathematics led her to study computer engineering. She also has a talent for leadership. Today Alexandra works as a test manager, a career combining expertise in software quality assurance with good communication skills.

When she pursued her bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, her sights weren’t set on testing, but when she encountered it in the programme’s many projects the field kindled her interest.

“We also had visiting lecturers from the industry who worked with quality assurance of software. They described what the work was like and the career opportunities we could expect. After school, when I began looking for a job, there were lots of positions available for manual testers. It was just chance that testing became my career – but I’ve never regretted it.”

communication with a variety of stakeholders

Alexandra’s first job was as a manual tester in telecommunications. At System Verification, she has had the opportunity to specialize in test management. This involves tasks such as requirements analysis, creating test plans and designing test cases, but most of all she is responsible for the test team and communication with a variety of stakeholders. In an IT project, these include the client, programme managers, developers and users.

“I really like having an overall view and following the software throughout the project’s life cycle. I also enjoy the challenge of coordinating everything so we can make a great delivery.”

The role of test manager is a process of continual learning because every IT system has its own unique context. The test manager must understand every activity to be able to anticipate critical scenarios.

“The job requires an eye for – and an interest in – quality, but also a desire to continue developing. You should also like working with people. If you have these traits, there are plenty of exciting opportunities for you in software testing and quality assurance.”
