From Internship Into a Full-Time Job – Summership 2021

As we’re approaching 2022, we want to give a special spotlight to our ‘Summership’ program that happened this year. ‘Summership’ is an annual System Verification program that offers professional training for manual testing and test automation for graduate students. This internship is a great opportunity for students who are seeking to explore this career path.

A couple of months have passed since the internship and we had a chance to talk to the now full-time employees of System Verification. Five girls switched from interns to employees. Arzija, Emina, Sadifa, Sadžida, and Neira gladly answered a few questions about their experience during ‘Summership’.

The reason for taking this step for all of them was to apply their formal education on real-life projects when it comes to manual and automation testing with the help of our mentors. “I believed that this program would be great to upgrade my knowledge and as well to experience how it is to work on real projects and with mentors who can pass me some quality knowledge. System Verification seemed like a company that could give me all of that and I wasn’t wrong”, Emina said.

The internship was divided into two parts, manual and automation testing. The first month was dedicated to the manual and the second was for automated testing. For each phase, a mentor was there to guide and help them. Sadžida explained to us these two phases so even our future interns can get an insight into what they would be learning, “The manual testing contained the learning of writing test cases, exploratory testing, and reporting bugs. The automation part was a whole different experience, where the framework itself was prepared and written from scratch. Then we proceeded to write tests. How and in what order we worked was managed by our mentors.”

Everyone prioritizes their work in the best way that suits them. “The most efficient way for me to prioritize my work is to create a list of all things that need to be done. Seeing my tasks on a list helps me to prioritize them based on importance and approximate better how much time I will need for each task”, Sadifa said.

On the question of what kind of skills they acquired they answered quite differently from one another. On the one hand, some acquired a new skill to work in a team like Sadžida, “I want to be better at group work, and general communication with the team. Soft skills are important to me, so I try to get better at organizing and managing. Also, I want to learn new frameworks, programming languages, and ways of working in general.” While on the other hand, Emina answered “I wanted to gain more knowledge about manual and automated testing – what are the best practices in QA- how to write test cases, how to report bugs and build a framework for automated tests.”

Apart from gaining knowledge and connections in the work field, Neira said, “The best thing I experienced during the summership was working on a real project. The feeling of giving your contribution to big projects is really fantastic. Also, the mentors we had on the summership are really great experts who gave us a huge amount of knowledge and advice that we successfully use at work today”.

“First of all, I got an insight into how the processes in the company take place, how the communication between different parties is done, what the work is like in a healthy work environment. I learned a lot in two months – the basics of manual and automated testing. But the most important thing is that I met wonderful people with whom nothing is difficult. In the end, I need to mention that we had great mentors so it turned into a wonderful and very useful experience”, Emina said.

“With its fast-growing number of resources and demand in the industry, quality assurance is becoming an attractive career path for many. The most important thing that I have to say is that it is really fun finding and reporting bugs”, Arzija added.

In an addition to gaining valuable work experience, the internship helps improve soft skills too! So, to all our future ‘Summership’ interns, we would like to tell you that this career path is interesting but also challenging. The keys to improving in this field are gaining technical knowledge and communication.

Sadifa’s message to future interns perfectly sums up our article and that is, “For anyone looking to pursue this career path I would recommend developing their communication and problem-solving skills as much as possible and to be open to new learning opportunities. If you are ready to learn and improve yourself, you can accomplish just about anything.”
